Voluntary dental plan

WorkSafeBC offers a dental plan for all eligible retirees and inactive members. This is a voluntary dental plan and you are responsible for paying the full cost of the monthly premiums.

You have a one-time opportunity to join when you retire. If you do not apply when you retire, you will not be eligible to join the dental plan at a later date.

What the plan covers

The dental plan covers up to $1,500 of eligible dental services each calendar year and includes two sub-plans:

  • Plan A (basic, preventive and restorative dental services)
  • Plan B (major restorative services)

Under Plan A, you will be reimbursed for 80 per cent of the costs of basic, preventive and restorative dental services, including:

  • Regular checkup services (recall exams, polishing and fluoride) once every nine months
  • Preventive and restorative services (such as x-rays, fillings, extractions and root canals)
  • Denture repairs
  • Deep cleaning (scaling, root planing and gingival curettage)

Under Plan B, you will be reimbursed for 50 per cent of the costs of major restorative services recommended by a dentist, including:

  • Porcelain and gold crowns
  • Bridgework
  • Partial and full dentures

Monthly premiums and premium deductions

Eligible applicants who are either a retired or inactive member pay monthly premiums to join the dental plan.

Premiums may be adjusted every year, effective October 1. You will be notified if there is a change in the monthly premium cost. At the start of each month, Pacific Blue Cross (PBC) will withdraw your dental premium directly from your bank account or as a preauthorized charge on your credit card. Each month's premium will be withdrawn in the same month as coverage (e.g., your premium for July will be withdrawn on July 1). Note that if you do not have sufficient funds in your account to make the payment, PBC will notify you in writing. For more information, contact PBC.

Eligibility and cancellation

You don't need to be a Canadian citizen or resident to be eligible to enrol in the voluntary dental plan. You are eligible for the voluntary dental plan even if you deferred your pension and did not retire directly from active employment to a pension.

If you enrol, you must participate for a minimum of 12 months before you can cancel. If you decide to cancel, you are not permitted to re-enrol in the dental plan.

How to enrol in the plan

Apply directly with WorkSafeBC Total Rewards when you apply for your pension. You will receive an application form to complete and return.

If you are a deferred member and wish to join, contact WorkSafeBC Total Rewards.
